Exclusive Image: Lin Shaye Goes Bloody Mad in Next Year’s ‘The Grudge’!

The world of The Grudge is about to get bigger. The latest film in the hit franchise, produced by Sam Raimi and directed by Nicolas Pesce (The Eyes of My Mother), is set to come out on January 3, 2020, and we’ve got our hands on an exclusive new still from the movie – above – featuring the bloody good Lin Shaye, along with exclusive commentary by the director!

The Grudge began at the turn of the century, as a series of supernatural thrillers by Takashi Shimizu. The films grew in popularity until, in 2004, Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures remade the installment Ju-On: The Grudge as the box office hit The Grudge, directed by Shimizu and starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. The film depicts a horrifying murder that taints a Japanese house, everyone who comes in contact with it, and everyone who comes in contact with them, spinning an all-encompassing web of spectral terror.

The new The Grudge is described by the studio as “a reimagining of the horror classic,” but the new storyline is mostly shrouded in mystery. This new still of Lin Shaye (Insidious: The Last Key) might be a piece of the puzzle, according to director Nicolas Pesce.

“So, a big motif in this movie is – and this is something that has always been the case with The Grudge – I think what’s really interesting is this is a movie where all the characters are dealing with something horrific in their real lives, that is grounded and realistic and not supernatural, before they ever set foot in the Grudge house,” Pesce explains.

“And a big motif is what’s more frightening: real life or the supernatural?

“What we do in the film is show that yes, the supernatural can be terrifying, but what’s even more terrifying is what it can make you do to yourself. So this is a moment with Lin Shaye where, I don’t want to reveal too much, but this is sort of the consequences of what The Grudge has made her do,” Pesce says.

“This photo is at the height of her Grudge-induced madness,” the director finally teases.

The Grudge co-stars Andrea Riseborough, Demian Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin and Jacki Weaver, and will be Rated “R”!
